How to carry out home functional exercise for paraplegic patients
For patients who carry out restorative functional exercise at home, first of all, they must establish the courage and self-confidence to overcome the disease, and secondly, they must ensure that At the same time of safety, we should combine work and rest to maximize functional exercise. According to our past experience, combining our drug treatment with scientific functional exercise will be of great benefit to the final recovery of paraplegic patients.
I. Rollover training
The purpose of this training is to prevent pressure ulcers caused by prolonged pressure on the patient’s body.
The patient lies supine, lifts both upper limbs up, shakes left and right several times, and turns over to one side by inertia.
2. Sit-up and sit-up balance training
1. Sit-up training
The patient is supine and tied with one hand at the end of the bed the straps, prop up the bed with the other hand, and lift the upper body. Sit up with your body supported.
2. Seated balance training
The patient sits and lies with the legs straight, and the hands are lifted up slowly to maintain the balance of the body. Gradually increase the number of times your hands are raised, extending the duration of the lift.
3. Support and decompression and bed movement training
1. Support training
Sit the patient firmly with legs straight . Use your arms to prop your body up so your hips are off the bed.
2. Decompression training
The wheelchair is locked, and the patient supports the wheelchair armrest with both hands. Use your arms to prop your body up so your hips are off the bed. It is encouraged to do this every half hour to prevent pressure sores.
3. Front Movement Training
Patients place their hands behind their backs to support the bed. Move your hips forward away from the bed.
4. Lateral mobility training
Patients should place their hands on both sides of the body to support the bed. Move your hips away from the bed to the left or right.
4. Transfer and wheelchair training
1. Assisted transfer training
The trainer faces the patient and presses the knees against the patient On the knees, hold the patient’s hips with both hands and hold the patient up. The patient holds the trainer’s shoulder with one hand, and the other hand hangs down naturally. Assist the patient to slowly transfer to the bed.
2. Forward transfer training
The wheelchair is facing the bedside, and the wheelchair is locked. Assist the patient to slowly transfer to the bed, hold the wheelchair armrest with both hands, support the body, and move from the front of the wheelchair to the bed.
3. Transfer training to the side
The wheelchair and the bed are at an angle of about 45 degrees, the wheelchair is locked, and the patient puts both legs on the bed. The patient supports the bed with one hand and the wheelchair armrest with the other hand to keep the buttocks away from the wheelchair.
V. Standing training
Standing on knees and hips
1. Let the patient put both hands on the edge of the bed and put both feet on the ground , sit on the edge of the bed;
2. The partner sits opposite the patient, presses his knee against the patient’s knee, holds the patient’s hip with both hands, and asks the patient to hold his shoulder with both hands.
3. The cooperator holds the patient’s buttocks tightly with both hands and pulls it towards their own direction. At the same time, the patient can stand with both hands.
After the above actions are completed, the patient can be allowed to stand for 15 to 30 minutes each time, increasing in turn. The patient’s feet are swollen and bruised, and the patient’s feet can be raised at night when sleeping, and the swelling can subside.
6. Walking training
1. Walking with support: After standing for a period of time, the patient can exercise support for walking. Fix (splint) the patient’s knee with a knee immobilizer, and then support the parallel bars to perform functional reconstruction exercises such as stepping and leg raising.
2. Walking training of the walker: first stand with the walker with the upper hand, and then use the strength of the waist and hip joints to alternately throw out the lower limbs in turn, or hold the walker to practice squatting Get up and strengthen the muscles of the lower limbs, so that you can slowly move voluntarily to walk with crutches. to achieve the purpose of self-care. (A photo of walking aid is attached, which can be processed by yourself)
After 3-4 hours of daily exercise, try to move the muscles below the paralyzed plane, including massage techniques such as rubbing and rubbing, to promote blood circulation, Keep the muscles plump, and at the same time perform passive movements of the joints below the paralyzed plane to keep the joints flexible to prevent joint stiffness and affect further functional exercise.
Rehabilitation training for paraplegic patients is essential and a very important part of our treatment process. The rehabilitation training stage is a particularly hard process, so I hope that patients and friends must establish the information of overcoming the disease And determination, we will accompany you to a healthy tomorrow hand in hand.
