How to choose sewing machine threadHow to choose sewing machine needle and sewing thread

Sewing threads used to sew various materials can be divided into cotton thread, silk thread, hemp thread, polyester thread, nylon thread, vinylon thread, polyester-cotton blended thread and synthetic fiber filament thread according to the raw material.

The single yarn count range of sewing thread is generally 9-80, and the number of plies is mostly 3 strands, but there are also types of 2 strands, 4 strands and more than 6 strands, up to 12 strands. Sewing threads with more than 6 strands are generally used in the leather, sail and shoe industries.

There are many package forms of sewing thread. In the era of manual sewing, mainly twisted cotton thread and silk thread. With the use of sewing machines, wood yarn groups appeared, that is, the waxed cotton thread was wound on the wood core, and then there were paper core (or plastic core) threads, cardboard threads, thread balls, pagoda threads, etc. The capacity of various packages varies according to civil and industrial use. Civil sewing thread, such as wood yarn ball, paper core thread, cardboard thread and thread ball, etc., with a length of 50-1000 meters; industrial sewing thread with a package length of 1000-11000 meters, usually wound in a conical bobbin or On the edged bobbin, it is called pagoda line or splint bobbin line. How to judge the quality of sewing thread?

The main qualities that the sewing thread must have are:

1. The surface is smooth and clean, the color is uniform, and it can be sewn.

2. Certain fastness and abrasion resistance.

3. Small shrinkage.

Synthetic fiber sewing thread has the advantages of high strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and small shrinkage, and has replaced cotton thread to a large extent. When sewing elastic fabrics, low-elastic polyester sewing threads are often used to keep the stitches and fabrics stretched in the same way. In order to avoid the phenomenon that the sewing thread does not match the color of the fabric, the transparent synthetic fiber filament thread can be selected. Because the thread quality is transparent, it is suitable for sewing fabrics of various colors.

Sewing machine needles

There are many types of sewing machine needles, and you may have noticed signs such as SIZE 75/11 on the packaging of the sewing machine. , what do the 75 and 11 represent here? In fact, it also refers to the model, the front is the European system, the back is the American system, and the following is the comparison table between the American system and the European system:

European system: 60 65 70 75 80 90 100 110 120

US: 8 9 10 11 12 14 16 18 19

Whether it is European or American, the smaller the size, the thinner the needle. Our country usually adopts the American name, such as 11-gauge needle, 14-gauge needle, etc…

The choice of needle is mainly based on the thickness of the fabric. The thinner the material, the thinner the needle. If you use a very thick needle to sew thin fabrics, you will leave large needle holes in the fabric, which is unsightly. On the contrary, if you use a thin needle to sew thick fabrics, it is easy to break the needle.

With so many models, do we need to prepare them all? Of course not. Ordinary households are generally 11 and 14. No. 11 is used for sewing thin cotton fabrics, and No. 14 is used for sewing canvas, denim or patchwork. Further consider the 9th and 16th, the 9th can be sewn with window screen knitted cotton, and the 16th can be sewn with thicker cloth such as canvas.

Sewing Thread

The types and specifications of sewing thread are more abundant. Let’s not say anything else, just introduce the most commonly used polyester thread. Most of them are sold on the market today.

Common types of polyester threads are: 20s/2, 20s/3, 30s/2, 30s/3, 40s/2, 40s/3, 50s/2, 50s/3, 60s/2, 60s/3, the most common of which is 40s/2.

What does the type of polyester thread mean? The first half of “/” indicates the yarn count. 20s is 20 yarns, 30s is 30 yarns. What is “count”? Count refers to the total length of 840 yards (1 yard = 91.4 cm) of yarn spun from one pound (453.6 g) of raw material. A total length of 16800 is 20s, and a total length of 33600 is 40s. It’s complicated, right? In fact, we only need to know that the larger the number in front of s, the finer the yarn.

What does the 2 or 3 after “/” mean? This refers to the number of strands of yarn. You can take a closer look at the sewing thread you have on hand, it is not a single yarn, but 2 or 3 strands twisted together. The expression for 2 shares is /2, and the expression for 3 shares is /3.

20s/2 means that the sewing thread is twisted from 2 strands of 20-count yarn, and 20s/3 means that the sewing thread is twisted from 3 strands of 20-count yarn.

Similar to selecting needles, use thin threads for thin fabrics and thick threads for rear fabrics.

40s/2 thread is the most commonly used thread for household sewing. It can be used for both general fabrics and 20s/2 thread for thick material or surface decoration.

Tips

1. Select the material of the sewing thread first;

2. Where is the sewing thread? Whether it is neat after molding, if it is not neat, there may be many inner joints or uneven thickness;

3. The fluffing degree of the sewing thread;

4. The sewing thread has been dyed at high temperature

5. Whether the elongation of the sewing thread meets the standard you need;

6. The tensile force meets your own standard;

7. Whether the roughness meets the international and national standards;

8. The color fastness has reached the standard (different standards can be customized according to customer requirements);

9. Whether the environmental protection requirements are met (environmental protection requirements are based on customer requirements, and the requirements of each country are different);

10. The length detection can calculate the gram-to-weight ratio according to different specifications;

11. The yarn should not be too wet when the sewing thread is received, otherwise it is easy to mold or fade;

12. Necessary needles, No. 11 and No. 14; general sewing thread 40s/ 2. 20s/2 is a good choice for hand sewing basting thread;

13. The popular name of sewing thread model will remove the “s/” in the middle, for example, 40s/2 will be called directly 402;

14. When your sewing machine has problems such as jumper thread and thread breakage, it is often caused by the selection of inappropriate needle and thread.
