Foot massage precautions
1. The massage room should have fresh air and a suitable temperature to prevent guests from getting cold. Fans should not be used to blow guests’ feet during massage in summer.
2. Before massage, the massage therapist and guests should wash their hands and feet and cut their nails short to prevent skin damage and cross infection. And prepare the necessary supplies such as massage towels and massage creams.
3. At the beginning of the massage, the heart must first explore the cardiac reflex area, and perform three types of manipulations: light, medium and heavy. In the case of understanding whether the heart is normal, then decide the massage intensity and operation plan to avoid accidents.
4. It is not advisable to do foot massage 0.5 hours before and 1 hour after meals. Hunger can easily lead to hypoglycemia and collapse; foot massage after eating will further stimulate gastrointestinal motility, increase gastrointestinal load, and cause gastrointestinal dysfunction.
5. When there is trauma or infection on the foot, massage the corresponding part of the opposite foot or the corresponding area of the hand on the same side. If local redness, swelling and blood stasis are caused by improper manipulation, apply some safflower oil or camphor tincture, etc., and then massage until the local area returns to normal.
6. Try to avoid bony protrusions during massage to prevent damage to the periosteum. Severe stimulation should be avoided for sensitive areas, and light stimulation should be used for children and most women.
7. Within 0.5 hours after massage, instruct guests to drink 300-500 mL of warm water to promote the excretion of metabolites in time. Children, the elderly, and the infirm can appropriately reduce the amount of water they drink, preferably 150 to 200 mL.
8. The time of massage is determined according to the needs of the guests. Generally 30 ~ 45min is appropriate, not too long.
9. The following short-term reactions may occur after the massage. The client does not need to panic. After a few days, the reactions will disappear on their own. Do not give up the massage.
(1) After massage, the urine volume increases, the odor becomes thicker, and the color becomes darker.
(2) Symptoms such as low-grade fever, chills, fatigue, and general malaise occur.
(3) The ankle is swollen after massage, especially those with lymphatic obstruction.
(4) Varicose veins are more obvious in patients with varicose veins of lower extremities.
(5) Pain stars or organ dysfunction in the reflex zone aggravated.
10. For guests who have received foot massage for a long time, their pain sensitivity gradually decreases. In order to improve their sensitivity and massage effect, guests can be asked to soak their feet in 1% hot salt water (about 45°C). 20 to 30 minutes.
11. After massage, wash hands with warm water. Gloves should be worn when going out in winter to protect hand joints. Every month, the traditional Chinese medicine of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, clearing meridians and collaterals can be used, decoction, fumigation and washing, soaking hands for 20-30min. Commonly used soaking prescriptions are: Angelica, papaya, hematoxylin, Asarum, ginger, safflower, Drynaria, 10g each of Shengdi and Zelan.
12. During menstruation and pregnancy, women should generally use foot massage with caution or disable foot massage.
13. Local skin infection, ulceration, hemorrhagic diseases, acute infectious diseases, active pulmonary tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, food poisoning, acute myocardial infarction, severe heart, kidney failure, liver necrosis and other critically ill patients are prohibited Foot massage.
14. Foot massage can be combined with other treatments, but acupuncture should not be used at the same time.
15. The operator should identify the reflex area according to the foot characteristics of different guests, and the massage should be applied in the correct direction, with appropriate strength, uniform and deep penetration.

Position and function of foot reflex zone
The map of foot reflex zone is shown in Figure 1-9.
The distribution characteristics of the foot reflex area and the massage selection and distribution area
(1) The distribution characteristics of the foot reflex area
1. The tissues and organs above the neck of the human body are distributed in the left and right reflex zones of the feet, that is, the left frontal sinus, trigeminal nerve, cerebellum and brain stem, nose, cerebral hemisphere, neck, eyes, ears, etc. The reflex area is distributed on the right foot, while the reflex area of the same name on the right head and neck is distributed on the left foot. The reflex areas of tissues and organs below the neck do not cross distribution.
2. The distribution of most reflex zones is the same for both feet. Only a few reflex areas are distributed only on the left or right feet, such as the heart, spleen, descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum, anal reflex areas are distributed only on the left foot, while the liver, gallbladder, cecum and appendix, ileocecal valve and ascending colon reflex. The area is distributed only on the right foot.
3. Most reflex areas have only one location on the same foot, and a few reflex areas have two or more locations on the same foot, such as eyes, ears, gonads, anus and rectum, ribs, There are multiple locations for reflex zones such as the coccyx, hip joint, sciatic nerve, tonsils, frontal sinus, etc.
(2) Selection and allocation of foot reflex area massage
For the discomfort caused by the dysfunction of a certain tissue or organ in the body, it is generally also The method of “massaging the whole body, focusing on strengthening” should be adopted, that is, massage all the reflex areas of the feet to promote blood circulation and enhance the function of various tissues and organs of the whole body. On this basis, according to the specific discomfort, select key reflex areas, increase the number and intensity of massage to strengthen stimulation, in order to receive better results. For severe discomfort, only select key reflex areas for heavy manual stimulation, which can achieve quick results.
The key reflection area includes three parts: basic reflection area, main reflection area and relevant reflection area.
1. The basic reflex zones are the kidney, ureter, and bladder. The main function is to enhance the excretory function of the urinary system, and excrete toxic substances and metabolites from the body. Whether it is a health massage or a massage to eliminate discomfort, massage the basic reflex area 3 times at the beginning and at the end.
2. The main reflex area refers to the corresponding (same name) reflex area of the tissue or system that produces discomfort in the foot. In other words, only the reflex zone is recognized, but the symptoms are not recognized, such as the structural and functional abnormalities of the vertebrae, joints, ligaments, muscles, fascia and other tissues of the waist. There are many kinds of low back pain and discomfort, no matter what kind of low back discomfort, the main The reflex areas are all lumbar reflex areas.
3. Relevant reflex areas According to the nature of the discomfort, the reflex areas closely related to the discomfort can be selected, such as various inflammations and fever, and the relevant reflex areas of the immune system and endocrine system can be selected.

Hazards and precautions of foot massager
(1) The nails must be cut short and washed before massage. Apply an ointment to lubricate, and then massage in circular rubbing or up-and-down squeezing, depending on the situation of the massaged point. And for most of the massage parts, it is necessary to pay attention to massage in the direction of the heart, the intensity of stimulation should be from light to heavy, and the pressure should be gradually increased.
(2) The room should be insulated, ventilated and kept fresh. During summer treatment, do not use a fan to blow the patient’s feet.
(3) If the patient is nervous, physically fatigued or emotionally agitated, let the patient rest for a while, and then start treatment after the patient calms down.
(4) After massage, within half an hour, drink 500 ml of warm water (do not exceed 150 ml for kidney disease patients). To facilitate the excretion of metabolic waste from the body.
(5) Avoid compressing the skeletal part to prevent inflammation of the periosteum or bleeding and swelling (thrombocytopenia is prone to bruising, and should be noted).
(6) If the foot is injured, avoid applying pressure on the injured part of the foot, and find the pain points in the relevant reflex areas of the upper and lower limbs to massage.
(7) After receiving foot massage for a long time, the feeling of foot pain will be dull. At this time, you can soak your feet in salt water for half an hour, the sensitivity of the feet will be enhanced, and the treatment effect will be greatly improved.
Contraindications of foot massage
(1) During women’s menstruation or pregnancy, foot massage should be avoided to avoid excessive uterine bleeding or affect Fetal health.
(2) Because foot massage has the effect of promoting blood circulation, it should not be used for patients with severe hemorrhagic diseases caused by cerebral hemorrhage, visceral hemorrhage and other reasons, so as not to cause greater hemorrhage.
(3) For those critically ill patients with severe renal failure, heart failure, liver necrosis, etc., the stimulation of foot massage can cause a strong reaction or even worsen the condition, so it must be used with caution.
(4) For patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis, it should not be used, in order to avoid the spread of tuberculosis in the blood, resulting in the serious consequences of diffuse and miliary tuberculosis.
(5) For patients with frequent angina pectoris, the patient should be instructed to stay in bed absolutely, and should be sent to the hospital for medical treatment as much as possible, and the foot massager should not be abused.
(6) Patients with high fever, extreme fatigue, weakness, long-term use of hormones, and foot lesions are not suitable for massage.
