As soon as I wrote this title, my nose was a little sour because I remembered the first tent I bought.
I was particularly impressed. It was a single-layer non-adhesive four-person tent. The biggest feature was…… Attention viewers: iron tent poles! ! ! This tent was purchased in 1994 and was prepared for fishing. At that time, the knowledge about the tent was limited to the use of people living outside. The biggest feature of it is that it’s “incomparably heavy and will never block the rain”! The only advantage is that the tent poles are very safe and never worry about damage.
When buying outdoor equipment, tent space is often ignored by backpackers. I have never seen someone ask which tent is the price? Is it rainproof? Is it light? But it is rare to ask if the interior space of this tent is comfortable. When I am doing equipment training, I have to talk about four main points for tents
, namely: weight, waterproof, price, and space. Since few people ask, I will talk about the development trend of space today.
Space issues have always been ignored by everyone. I think one of the fundamental reasons may be that we still use relatively few tents. Without comparison, many friends think that tents should be so small and slow. Slowly, I have no idea about its space comfort.
In retrospect, when I used tents in the first few years, I didn’t have much impression of the sense of space. It was only then that I suddenly discovered that the tents could also be more comfortable to live in. Just like the house we live in, if you live in a small room of 30 square meters for a long time, you will not feel anything when you are used to it. But if you change to a 90-square-meter large room, and then want to live in a 30-square-meter cottage, you will feel very uncomfortable. Now think about being able to live in such a comfortable tent outdoors, it’s really warm!
Next, I will talk about my experience in buying tents, taking the most common double-layer camping tent as an example:
Waterproof, I used to see some waterproof tents that are PU1200MM The fabrics are basically PU1500MM now. The bottom of the tent is usually more, because when people lie or sit on it, there is a pressure on the bottom of the tent, so the waterproof performance of the bottom of the tent is better.
The weight, if it needs to be carried in a bag, I recommend choosing within 2.5KG (this can be adjusted up and down according to the different carrying capacity of each person), and many lightweight tents can now be used. It is a better choice if it is within 2KG.
Space, as mentioned earlier, this is a contradiction with weight. Usually the space within 2KG is not too big, and some comfort is always sacrificed. And if the space is large, no matter how good the material is, it will not be too light. After all, as much space as there is, there must be as many inner and outer tents.
To paraphrase a sentence from Hamlet: To live or to perish? is a difficult choice. The audience can also try to “weight or space?” It is a difficult question to choose”
Price, the physical store will be slightly more expensive, but after-sales can also be supported to look carefully at the real thing. Online shopping will be cheaper, but don’t think too much about the corresponding service.
By the way, the way of building also needs to be considered. Some tents are very convenient to set up, and even one person can easily do it. For example, many tents are now using the method of first supporting two poles and then using hasps to hang the inner tent. Some tents are not so easy, such as mountain tents and tunnel tents, which usually require the cooperation of two people to support them faster. If you’re used to being a lone ranger, then this is something you have to consider too.
Old backpacker reminder: After each use, be sure to clean it and place it in a cool place to dry, and the tent should not be exposed to the sun! If you don’t wash it, it may not smell as good the next time you use it. When storing, spread out as much as possible, and there will be pleats in the tent bag when rolled for a long time.
