How to use aircraft life jackets

Where Are the Aircraft Life Jackets?

Aircraft life jackets are divided into baby life jackets and adult life jackets, stored in specific locations. For first-class and business-class passengers, the life jackets are generally found under the seat guards. For economy-class passengers, the life jackets are located under the seats and can be accessed by reaching down. Babies under the age of 1 year should use a baby life jacket, which is stored under the seat of the first row of infant cradles in each class. Passengers over the age of 1 year should use an adult life jacket.

How to Use the Aircraft Life Jacket

  1. Take out the life jacket, tear open the package, and put it on over your head.
  2. Fasten the straps tightly.
  3. Pull the red inflation handle to automatically inflate the life jacket.
  4. If the inflation is insufficient, use the manual inflation tube to inflate it by mouth.
  5. When a minor is wearing an adult life jacket, place the strap between their legs and fasten it tightly.
  6. For baby life jackets, please seek assistance from a flight attendant.

Precautions for Using Life Jackets on Board

  1. Inflation Timing: Do not inflate the life jacket until you are leaving the plane and boarding the lifeboat. Inflated life jackets can obstruct aisles and exits, making evacuation difficult. Additionally, inflated life jackets can be punctured by sharp objects, rendering them ineffective. In water, an inflated life jacket can cause a person to float within the cabin, making escape difficult.
  2. Swimming Considerations: Avoid swimming in a life jacket unless absolutely necessary. Sea temperatures are often low, with surface temperatures rarely exceeding 20°C (68°F) and often below 4°C (39°F). Adults in light clothing can survive for only 2-4 hours in 10°C (50°F) water. As depicted in the movie “Titanic,” prolonged exposure to cold water can be fatal.
  3. Special Needs Passengers: Passengers who cannot take care of themselves or have limited upper limb mobility should inflate their life jackets immediately after putting them on.
  4. Baby Life Jackets: Inflate the baby’s life jacket once the baby leaves the seat. Inflate the life jacket halfway after the child leaves the seat by pulling one inflation handle and tie the life jackets of the mother and baby together.
  5. Wearing Position: Always wear the life jacket over all clothing.
  6. Special Tips:
    • Emergency Use Only: Life jackets should only be used in emergencies. Do not use life jackets under normal circumstances. There has been an incident where a passenger prematurely inflated a life jacket after a flight attendant’s demonstration.
    • Do Not Remove from Aircraft: Life jackets are emergency equipment and must not be taken off the plane. Removing them can endanger other passengers and may violate relevant laws and regulations.
