Danger in cold regions, cold and freezing will threaten the lives of those in distress. But according to many self-rescue experiences, the real danger is not the cold, nor the freezing and snow itself, but oneself, panic and extreme fatigue are the most deadly.
Those who are caught in the dangerous environment of snow must be brave, realistic, calm and optimistic to eliminate the fear of cold.
Preparation before departure
Anyone should have some knowledge about self-rescue in cold area before entering the cold area and snow area. Bring minimal equipment such as:
·Warm, waterproof sleeping bags
.
·Warm, lightweight clothing, snow boots.
·Waterproof matches, candles, sunglasses.
·Sleds, ski poles, ice axes, etc.

Save lives
The sequence of self-rescue in any situation in cold area and snow must be: build shelter, keep warm, get food and drink. It must be noted that:
· Don’t use up your energy or get yourself sweaty, your clothes will quickly lose their insulating properties when they get wet, and within a few hours, You will be frozen. Remember: Dampness is the real danger.
· Build a safe shelter as soon as possible, or dig a snow hole to hide from the cold wind and preserve your heat. To maintain a proper rhythm, reduce snow activities. The best and safest location should be chosen for the construction of the shack. Never build a shack where an avalanche will pass, but under cover of a large tree or on a ridge, as avalanches usually travel downwards. The ideal snow cave should be built on an almost vertical snow peak, dig a hole directly on it, and leave 0.6 to 0.9 meters thick for the top.
· Choose a fire location on level ground, away from the wind and out of low-hanging branches, so that the melted snow won’t drip down and put out the fire. Snow should also be removed around the ignition site to create a clearing. Prepare enough fuel to get the fire going.
