What does FM mean? Introduction to FM FM radio

What Does FM Mean?

FM (Frequency Modulation) is a method of modulating a radio signal by varying its frequency. Commonly, FM refers to general FM broadcasting, which operates in the frequency range of 88-108 MHz in China and 76-90 MHz in Japan. However, FM is also used as a modulation method in other bands, such as the short-wave range between 27-30 MHz for amateur radio, space, and artificial satellite communications. FM radio, therefore, refers to radio broadcasting that uses frequency modulation.

Introduction to FM Radio

FM radio transmits radio signals using an FM carrier wave. Due to the shorter wavelengths used in FM transmission, the signal quality is significantly better compared to AM (Amplitude Modulation) radio signals. However, the shorter wavelengths also mean that FM signals have a relatively limited propagation distance. Nowadays, some mobile phones are equipped with FM radio functionality.

FM Terms

FM is an abbreviation for Frequency Modulation. Here are some common terms used in radio:

  • FM (Frequency Modulation): A method of radio signal modulation.
  • MW (Medium Wave): Radio signals with wavelengths between 200-600 meters.
  • SW (Short Wave): Radio signals with wavelengths between 10-100 meters.
  • LW (Long Wave): Radio signals with wavelengths between 150-284 kHz.
  • AM (Amplitude Modulation): A method of radio signal modulation where the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied.

FM radio operates in the frequency range of 76-108 MHz. In China, the range is 87.5-108 MHz. Short wave (SW) frequencies range from 10-100 meters, medium wave (MW) frequencies range from 200-600 meters, and long wave (LW) frequencies range from 150-284 kHz.

Additional Terms

  • TS (Transport Stream): A transmission format for digital television, used primarily for high-definition television and unrelated to radio broadcasting.
