Lighters are filled with flammable gas. Commonly used fuels include butane, propane, and liquefied petroleum gas.

In the past, gasoline was often used in lighters, but today, butane, propane, and liquefied petroleum gas are the most common. These gases are pressurized and stored in the lighter’s fuel tank. When released into the air, they absorb heat, vaporize, and expand rapidly, making them easy to ignite.

Modern lighters can be classified by the type of fuel used: liquid lighters or gas lighters. They can also be categorized by their ignition method: either grinding wheel lighters or electronic lighters.

2. How to Identify Authentic Zippo Lighter Fluid

  1. The registered trademark symbol (®) in the upper right corner of the word “Zippo” on genuine lighter fluid is smaller compared to counterfeit products.
  2. Genuine Zippo lighter fluid has an “ICC” certification enclosed in a diamond shape on the bottom left of the front label, which is missing on fake versions.
  3. On the front of genuine Zippo fluid, the triangle is generally aligned with the “m” in (125ml) or positioned in the middle of the “m”. In counterfeit fluid, the triangle is farther away.
  4. Fake fluids often lack a small period (“.”) after “4 fl. oz (125ml)” on the front label. However, not all fake products have this inconsistency, so it shouldn’t be the only factor to check.
  5. The laser-printed code at the bottom of genuine Zippo fluid is dark blue and clear, while fake products often have a light blue code that appears less sharp, as it is not printed using a high-quality laser machine.
  6. The white nozzle on authentic Zippo fluid bottles is designed for single use only.
  7. The smell of genuine Zippo fuel is distinct and aromatic. It evaporates quickly when spilled on the hands, leaving no lingering odor. If a strong kerosene smell remains after volatilization, the fluid is likely counterfeit.
  8. When refueling with genuine Zippo fluid, there is typically no white residue or string-like filaments.
